How To Reap The Benefits of Sea Moss and What To Avoid

Sea moss is the trending new superfood right now. There has been some back and forth as to whether its really beneficial for your health or should you avoid it altogether. First off, what is sea moss?

Sea moss, also known as Irish Moss, is a red algae found on the Atlantic coastlines of Europe, the Caribbean Islands, and North America.

Like much of the other superfoods, sea moss has been around for centuries. It’s gaining more traction as celebs, and YouTube health gurus start to incorporate it into their meals and beauty routines. Also, like many other superfoods, experts aren’t backing the hype entirely yet.

Here’s what you should know about sea moss.

Promotes Good Digestion

Sea moss feeds the good bacteria in your gut, which in turn promotes good bacteria’s growth. This is just one of the popular ways that people use sea moss. A healthy gut leads to a pleather of other functions your body does to stay healthy. For example, proper digestion also leads to you sleeping better, reduced brain fog, and more energy.

Helps Thyroid Function

Your thyroid is a vital hormone gland. It plays a significant role in regulating bodily functions by releasing a steady amount of its hormones into your bloodstream. Your thyroid controls how your heart, muscle, and digestion functions. It also aids brain development.

If your thyroid isn’t functioning correctly, you may experience specific symptoms or issues that weren’t there before. Such as weight gain, unusual brain fog, or even chills throughout your body. Women are more likely to suffer from thyroid issues, but anyone can experience them.

Relieves Muscle Soreness

Because sea moss is made up of collagen proteins, it repairs and strengthens the connective tissues of your muscles. Using sea moss as a post-workout recovery drink is ideal. It also has anti-inflammatory properties as well as minerals and nutrients to help your body recover after an intense workout.

Sea moss has over 90 minerals and nutrients. This will keep you energized through your workouts and even throughout the day. It’s good for achy joints, especially if you have a manual labor day job. Sea moss replaces the minerals that you deplete so you can keep up your momentum.

Hair and Skin

Because sea moss synthesizes collagen, it nourishes your hair and skin.

For the skin, sea moss works excellent for many skin irritations such as sunburn, psoriasis, and eczema. It will soften your skin just as a lotion or cream would. Try adding some sea moss gel to your bath to have a nice soothing soak before bed.

For the hair, as I said before, sea moss nourishes your hair and also your scalp. Because it contains vitamin A, it will improve your scalps sebum production. If you are losing hair or it’s thinning, sea moss can be a remedy for that as well. It also contains vitamin E, which is known for fighting against oxidative stress (cause of hair loss). It is rich in iron, which also prevents hair loss. Iron deficiency could be a reason why you’re losing your hair to begin with.

Boosts Immune System

Everyone wants a boosted immune system, especially now during this pandemic. Sea moss contains amino acids, antimicrobial, antiviral, and antioxidant properties, so you are sure to ward off any infections. Also, one of the vitamins included in sea moss is Vitamin C. Of course, anything with Vitamin C is going to up your body’s healing process.

It has potassium chloride too, which is incredible for helping the body reduce inflammation and lower the chances of you getting an infection.

Increases Metabolism

If you’re trying to lose weight, this is perfect for you. Sea moss contains high levels of iodine. Iodine is an essential mineral that produces thyroid hormones. These hormones increase metabolism and make sure it’s functioning correctly.

Better Sex 😉

If my guy readers out there have any difficulty with sex-related drive, stamina, or erection; this is for you. No shade, honestly. Because sea moss has anti-inflammatory properties, it promotes circulation throughout the whole body, including reproductive organs.

Sea moss also contains zinc, which is known to have a high impact on testosterone levels. High testosterone levels lead to an increased amount of…….shall I say “swimmers,” and stronger too. 🙂

How You Can Add Sea Moss To Your Diet

What’s great about sea moss is that it has little to no taste. It can be added to any dish, such as baked goods, sauces, and soups. It will also work great for smoothies due to it acting as a thickening agent.

If you’re not a cook and would instead pop a health pill, you can. You can purchase ready-to-use sea moss capsules, powder, and gel.

Cons of Sea Moss

When used on the skin, some people have reported redness and irritation when applied topically.

Some people have also described symptoms of nausea and/or vomiting when used in their recipes.

What are the nutritionists saying? Well, there has been debate over sea moss. It is not a new food. The benefits are not well researched, and too much of anything can be harmful to your health. For example, as I mentioned before, sea moss has iodine properties that contribute to your thyroid function. Too much or too little of iodine can throw-off how your thyroid is currently operating.

In short, there’s a lot we don’t know yet.

Thoughts

Sea moss does come with a lot of nutritional value; unfortunately, not much is backed by science. But so is many other superfoods also not supported by science but some still swear by their benefits.

I try anything at least once to see if I notice any differences or changes with my body.

Recap

Just to recap, sea moss is good for digestion, thyroid function, muscle soreness, hair, and skin, boosted immune system, increased metabolism, and better sex.

There are mixed reviews from individuals saying they love it, and it’s the new ingredient to their beauty routine, to my skin turned red and irritated.

Either way, try it for yourself and let me know if you give it a thumbs up or down.
